Rank Math gives you more for free and its paid plan covers unlimited personal websites, while Yoast SEO is the older, simpler plugin and charges per site. Yoast SEO Premium is $118.80 a year for one site. Rank Math PRO has a regular price of $107.88 a year, usually with a discount in the first year, and covers unlimited personal websites. If you run more than one site, Rank Math costs far less. If you run one site and want the most familiar tool, Yoast is a safe choice.

Both plugins do the core job well. The decision comes down to how many sites you have, which paid features you need, and how much setup you are willing to do.

What do these plugins actually do?

WordPress does not manage search settings well on its own. An SEO plugin fills the gap. Both Rank Math and Yoast handle the same core tasks:

  • Let you write the title and description that appear in search results for each page.
  • Generate an XML sitemap so search engines can find your pages.
  • Add structured data (schema) that describes your content to search engines.
  • Set canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content problems.
  • Control which pages are indexed.
  • Score each post against a target keyword and suggest improvements.

Neither plugin makes a page rank. They remove technical obstacles and prompt you to cover the basics. The content still has to be the best answer to the search.

One rule applies whichever you pick: run only one SEO plugin. Two of them will output duplicate titles, sitemaps and schema.

Free versions compared

Most small sites never need to pay. The free versions differ more than the paid ones.

Rank Math's own page lists basic SEO analysis, Google Search Console integration, a schema generator with 18 predefined types, XML sitemaps, post optimization tools, 404 monitoring and social media optimization in the free plugin.

The redirect manager is the feature that matters most here. When you change a page's address or delete a post, a redirect sends visitors and search engines to the right place. Without one, you get broken links and lose the value of any links pointing at the old address. Rank Math includes it free. With Yoast you need Premium, or a separate free redirection plugin.

Free version verdict: Rank Math includes more. Yoast's free version is leaner and has fewer settings to get wrong.

Yoast SEO Premium

Yoast keeps it simple with one plan.

  • Price: $118.80 a year, excluding VAT. That is $9.90 a month.
  • Sites: one subscription covers one site or domain.

According to Yoast's product page, Premium adds:

  • Redirect management. Yoast prompts you to create a redirect when you move or delete a page, and you can manage redirects in bulk by CSV.
  • Multiple keyphrases. Check a post against up to five keyphrases, with recognition of synonyms and word forms.
  • Internal linking. Suggestions for relevant pages to link to as you write, and detection of orphaned content with no links pointing to it.
  • AI features. AI drafts SEO titles and meta descriptions, including in bulk, for you to review and approve.
  • 24/7 support.
  • Bundled plugins. Local SEO, Video SEO and News SEO are now included, plus one seat of the Yoast SEO Google Docs add-on.

The bundled add-ons are the notable part. A local business, a news publisher or a video-heavy site gets specialist schema and sitemaps without buying anything extra.

Rank Math paid plans

Rank Math has three tiers, priced by the kind of site you manage.

PlanRegular price per yearWorks out toSitesKeywords tracked
PRO$107.88 plus taxes$8.99 a monthUnlimited personal websites500
Business$335.88 plus taxes$27.99 a month100 client websites10,000
Agency$779.88 plus taxes$64.99 a month500 client websites50,000

Rank Math also sells a bundle of PRO with WP Rocket for one website.

Rank Math discounts the first year. When we checked, the discounts shown were 11% on PRO, 10% on Business and 15% on Agency, and other promotions run during the year. The regular price is what you pay from the second year, so that is the figure used in the comparisons below. A first-year saving of 10% to 15% is mild compared with web hosting, where renewal increases of 150% or more are normal, as we show in Web Hosting Renewal Prices.

Pay attention to the words "personal" and "client". PRO covers sites you own. If you build sites for customers, Rank Math expects you to use Business or Agency.

What it costs for your number of sites

This is where the two diverge sharply. Yoast charges for every site. Rank Math charges once.

Sites you ownYoast SEO Premium per yearRank Math PRO per year
1$118.80$107.88
3$356.40$107.88
5$594.00$107.88
10$1,188.00$107.88

At one site the two are $10.92 apart. Beyond one site the gap grows quickly. Five Yoast licenses cost $594 a year. One Rank Math PRO license covers all five for $107.88, a saving of $486.12 a year.

For an agency with 20 client sites, Yoast Premium on every site would be $2,376 a year. Rank Math Business covers up to 100 client sites for $335.88 a year.

Price verdict: roughly level for a single site. Rank Math by a wide margin for anyone with several.

Keyword tracking

Rank Math PRO includes a rank tracker for 500 keywords, rising to 10,000 on Business and 50,000 on Agency. It shows how your pages' positions change over time, inside the WordPress dashboard.

The Yoast Premium feature list we reviewed does not include a rank tracker. Yoast users typically rely on Google Search Console, which is free and reports average position for every query your site appears for.

Search Console is the more reliable source either way, because the data comes from Google. A built-in tracker is a convenience. It saves you opening another tab and lets you watch a chosen list of terms.

Ease of use

Yoast is the plugin most WordPress tutorials were written around. Its interface is small: a box under each post with a traffic-light score for SEO and readability, and a short list of suggestions. There are fewer settings, which means fewer ways to misconfigure the site.

Rank Math has a setup wizard that asks about your site and applies sensible defaults, and it can import settings from Yoast. It is organized into modules you switch on and off, such as redirections, schema, sitemap, 404 monitor and local SEO. That is powerful, and it gives a newcomer more decisions to make.

A practical way to think about it:

  • If you want to install a plugin, fill in titles and descriptions, and not think about it again, Yoast suits you.
  • If you want redirects, schema types and monitoring in one place and are happy to spend an hour learning the settings, Rank Math suits you.

Will either plugin slow down my site?

Any plugin adds some code, and both of these mostly run in the admin area when you edit a post. On the public side of the site, their main output is a few lines of meta tags and a block of schema in the page head.

We have not benchmarked the two, so we will not claim one is lighter. In practice the SEO plugin is rarely what makes a WordPress site slow. Missing page caching, oversized images and heavy themes are far more common causes. If your site is slow, work through Why Is My WordPress Site Slow? 12 Fixes in Order before blaming the SEO plugin.

With Rank Math, switch off the modules you do not use. That keeps the admin area lighter and the settings shorter.

How to switch from one to the other

Changing SEO plugins is safe if you move the data before removing the old one.

  1. Back up the site first. How to Back Up a WordPress Site covers three ways.
  2. Install the new plugin while the old one is still active.
  3. Run the import. Rank Math's setup wizard detects Yoast and offers to import titles, descriptions, focus keywords, redirects and settings. Going the other way, Yoast provides import tools for other SEO plugins' data.
  4. Deactivate the old plugin as soon as the import finishes, so the two do not both output tags.
  5. Spot-check ten pages. View the page source and confirm there is one title tag, one meta description and one canonical link, and that they match what you had before.
  6. Check the sitemap address. The two plugins use different sitemap URLs. Submit the new one in Google Search Console and remove the old one.
  7. Test redirects. Visit three old addresses you know were redirected and confirm they still land in the right place.
  8. Delete the old plugin after a week without problems.

Rankings should not change from a clean switch, because the titles, descriptions and URLs that search engines see stay the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast?

Rank Math offers more features in its free version, including a redirect manager and 404 monitoring, and its paid plan covers unlimited personal sites. Yoast is simpler and more widely documented. For several sites Rank Math is better value. For one simple site either works well.

How much does Yoast SEO Premium cost?

Yoast SEO Premium was $118.80 a year, excluding VAT, on October 6, 2026. One subscription covers one site or domain. It includes the redirect manager, up to five keyphrases per post, internal linking suggestions, AI-drafted titles and descriptions, and the Local, Video and News SEO plugins.

How much does Rank Math PRO cost?

Rank Math PRO has a regular price of $107.88 a year plus taxes, which is $8.99 a month billed annually. The first year is usually discounted, by 11% when we checked in October 2026. It covers unlimited personal websites and tracks 500 keywords.

Is the free version of Rank Math enough?

For most small sites, yes. The free version handles titles, descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema with 18 predefined types, redirects, 404 monitoring and Google Search Console integration. Paid plans add keyword rank tracking, more schema options and tools for managing many sites.

Can I use Rank Math and Yoast together?

No. Running two SEO plugins produces duplicate title tags, meta descriptions, sitemaps and schema, which confuses search engines. Choose one. If you are switching, import your settings into the new plugin and deactivate the old one straight away.

Will switching SEO plugins hurt my rankings?

Not if you import your data first. Rank Math's setup wizard imports titles, descriptions, keywords and redirects from Yoast. After switching, check that each page has one title and one canonical tag, resubmit your sitemap in Search Console and test your redirects.

Does an SEO plugin improve rankings by itself?

No. An SEO plugin handles technical settings and reminds you of on-page basics. Rankings depend on how well your content answers the search, how fast and usable the site is, and whether other sites link to it. A green score in a plugin is a checklist, not a result.
